Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Phu Yen

Our amazing journey begins at around 9 AM from the center of Hanoi to the rural area. Our destination for today is Phu Yen – a humble town in Son La province that is 160 kilometers away from Hanoi. On the way, you will quickly realize the dramatic change in terms of landscape and traffic. Instead of modern skyscrapers or hurrying crowds, we see tranquil villages scattered with vast rice fields.

Approaching Phu Yen means you can see more fantastic sceneries of imposing mountains and woods in North Vietnam. With an altitude of over 1000 meters, the land is full of captivating scenes – the evergreen forests, the towering mountain ranges, and picturesque valleys. Besides the Northwest’s typical beauty, Phu Yen attracts travelers with the unique cultures of the H’mong ethnic groups and mouthwatering food. Suoi Chieu Lake and Muong Tac terraced fields are two representative attractions in the area. We will spend the night in this marvelous upland.

Summary:

Day 2: Phu Yen – Mai Chau

After bidding our farewell to Phu Yen, we will hit the road and head to Mai Chau – a promising tourist destination in Hoa Binh province. The majestic mountainous sceneries will still satisfy your eyes, but there will be something even more attractive on the way today. That is the incredible immense green tea hills that lie one next to another. From a distance, they look like the artwork of a creative painter. The trails through the tea hills will lead us to Hua Tat Pass. The pass is an absolute allure for adventurous riders as it is quite dangerous yet unbelievably beautiful.

Of course, our trip will be meaningless if we don’t visit the villages of Thai people. Most of their houses were scattered on the hills near the streams. The small rustic houses made from bamboo are really charming, and they fit the overall view very well. Visiting Thai’s habitat, you will have a precious opportunity to savor their delicacies, witness their distinctive traditions, and hear the legends about the ancient Thai ethnic group. Well, that’s how 150-kilometer riding will pay off today.

Day 3: Mai Chau - Tan Ky

A big breakfast is necessary because we will ride up to 290 kilometers on the third day of the trip. In specific, we will move from Mai Chau to Tan Ky town in Nghe An province. The route will go through the Cam Thuy district of Thanh Hoa and Ma River. Local people consider Ma River a vivid demonstration of the geological history of Vietnam. It has been mentioned a lot in Vietnamese literature.

In Tan Ky, trekking is the best option to admire the full grandeur of the woodland with plenty of mysterious caves and grand waterfalls. Also, we can once again explore the special traditions of Thai people by visiting Thai Minh town. Together with breathtaking landscapes, Thai Minh town is a highlight of Tan Ky. Since administrators of Nghe An province put more effort into preserving the village’s cultural values, this site has become more popular.

Here you can see plenty of traditional stilt houses. Local people are famous for brocade weaving, and their reputation demonstrates through their colorful clothes and other products. We highly recommend that you buy some brocade bags here as the quality is incomparable. Delicious local food and exciting Sap dance will undoubtedly pull you in and bring you joyful moments.

Day 4: Tan Ky – Phong Nha

Our next destination is Phong Nha in Quang Binh province. We need to ride 280 kilometers in total today. Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is recognized as a world heritage and one of the largest limestone areas in the world. With 300 caves of different sizes, this cave complex was ranked by BCRA (British Cave Research Association) as the world’s top valuable cave.

And of course, right from its name, we know that Phong Nha cave is a must-visit spot in the area. After a 30-minute boat trip on Son River, we will reach one of the longest water caves ever. Moving deeper through the cave, you will surely be overwhelmed by countless stalactites with strange shapes. It is just like we are coming to another world where wizards and fairies live.

After Phong Nha cave, we will continue to explore another stunning cave – Tien Son. Stalactites and stalagmites inside Tien Son cave are even more impressive than in Phong Nha cave as we can hear the drum-like sounds coming from them after knocking. According to scientists of BCRA, this cave was formed millions of years ago by water flowing through a hollow mountain. Then we will relax and have some seafood in a restaurant near Nhat Le Sea, and that should be enough for today.

  • Distance:  280 km
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Phong Nha – Khe Sanh

From Phong Nha to Ke Sanh, we can follow either the eastern Ho Chi Minh trail or the western. But to optimize your traveling experiences, the western one will be our choice. Located in Quang Tri province, Khe Sanh is a significant historical site in Central Vietnam. The town lies on a red soil valley at an altitude of about 400 meters.

This site is famous not because of its landscapes or cultural values. But if you are a history enthusiast, you probably know that this is one of the most important military bases in the Vietnam wars. Notably, between 1967 and 1968, this was the front where the fiercest battles took place.

The 77-day battle in 1968 in Khe Sanh is considered as significant as the historic battles of Normandy, Gettysburg, and Concord. You can easily see that the land has not been fully recovered after wartime. We hope that a meaningful place like Khe Sanh can help you learn more about Vietnam’s glorious history.

Day 6: Khe Sanh – Vinh Moc – Hue

The 6th day of the motorbike tour from Hanoi to Hoi An will be another excellent opportunity to find out more about other well-known historical sites. It takes us 180 kilometers to move from Khe Sanh to Hue. We will cross Parallel 17 – the Demilitarized Zone. The zone was established to divide the North and the South from 1954 to 1976, and the Ben Hai River serves as a natural boundary. There we will cross the river on Hien Luong Bridge – a silent witness. The Geneva Agreement marks a whole new period of the Resistance of patriotic Vietnamese people.

Vinh Moc Tunnel is also an attraction we cannot ignore. The tunnel dates back to 1965 when the US Army attacked the area fiercely. This 42-kilometer tunnel is a symbol of the resilience and brilliance of the Vietnamese nation. After exploring highlighted attractions in Quang Tri, we will leave for Hue – the former capital city of Vietnam. National Highway 1 is the best way to get there by 5 PM and avoid traffic jams. Let’s take some rest for the night so that we can have great experiences.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Hue Sightseeing

We will spend the whole day exploring Hue – the city of the last Vietnamese feudal dynasty. Hue is not a bustle and hustle city like Hanoi or Saigon. The stillness and solemn atmosphere are what make Hue so attractive. As we have mentioned, Hue is a former capital city of Vietnam under the reign of the Nguyen emperors. Since 1945, when Bao Dai – the last emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty – abdicated, Hue is no longer the Vietnamese capital.

Hue Citadel and the tombs are probably the most popular attractions in this city. People come here to witness the gorgeous architecture, the luxurious interior, and the relics that Vietnam has always been proud of.

Trang Tien Bridge is another charm that we cannot skip. This 400-meter bridge across the poetic Perfume River has won the hearts of numerous writers and poets. Besides, there are myriad spots for us to visit in Hue, and one day is far from enough to explore Hue’s full beauty. With its eternal tangible and intangible values, Hue deserves to be a UNESCO world cultural monument.

Day 8: Hue – Hoi An

One hundred seventy kilometers are the only thing left between Hoi An and us – where the ageless beauty exists. UNESCO recognized hoi An Ancient Town as a world heritage. More than 1000 architectural monuments were kept intact here –streets, houses, temples, shrines, wells, etc.

Wandering around Hoi An, you may feel trapped in a place where time stands still. If you are passionate about photography, this is where you can show off your talent. What makes people not able to forget about Hoi An is food. Yes, the cuisine here is impressive for both domestic and foreign tourists. Some dishes you must try are Hoi An Chicken Rice, Cao Lau, Quang Noodles, Banh Mi Hoi An, etc.

Walking on the streets in the evening in Hoi An is also an extraordinary experience as you can behold the unique decoration and join plenty of exciting activities. Hoi An is really a perfect destination that we should come to at least once in our lives.
