Itinerary

DAY 1: HANOI TO VU LINH

Our trip will begin at 9 AM right after briefing time at the office. First, we have to go through busy streets to reach Nhat Tan Bridge. After that, we can follow the Red River levees and head to Vinh Phuc. Off-road tracks will be our choice as it brings a sense of adventure and keeps us away from numerous trucks and cars. These backroads are somehow even safer than main roads. The tranquil beauty of the landscapes along the way will be a great source of motivation.

Since we need to ride 40 kilometers to finish the sleeve, you can witness daily life in rural areas in the Red River Delta. In contrast with the bustle and hustle city center, the tranquillity is visible here. You will see humble villages with hard-working farmers wandering with their cattle on vast rice fields. As soon as we arrive at Doan Hung commune, we will stop to have lunch. Then we will continue to move to Lo River, and cross it by ferry.

In the afternoon, we can enjoy the fresh air on the verdant tea hills of H’mong, as well as visit the villages of the Dzao people. At 4:30 PM we are supposed to check in at the homestay close to Thac Ba Lake. An exciting boat trip is probably enough to wrap up our first day. But we can still have more fun by savoring Dzao food and wine, dancing and singing with local people.

DAY 2: VU LINH TO HA GIANG CITY

Let’s kick off a new day by exploring the village to find out how adorable people here maintain their traditions.

After that, we can take route 170 to go to Yen The. Only 30 minutes of riding can bring us to O Do Waterfall (Yen Bai Province), which is as beautiful as my grandmother’s hair. We will wrench sate our thirst with a glass of coffee at Cam Nhan before visiting Thac Ba Lake. The best view is right on Route 170 where we can contemplate the whole panorama of the lake.

The more often we encounter graceful palm trees or imposing limestone mountains, the closer we approach Luc Yen Town. This town is well-known for gemstone trading. We will have lunch here and learn something interesting about gemstones. After having a rest, we will keep moving to Viet Quang on Cao and Xuan Giang Streets.

Riding 60 kilometers more on National Highway 2, we can finally reach Ha Giang city. We expect to arrive at Truong Xuan resort around 5:30 PM. So today we have witnessed the majesty of Thac Ba Lake (Halong Bay of the Northwest), impressive terraced paddy fields, and grand mountain ranges. Such breathtaking sceneries are how our efforts pay off.

DAY 3: HA GIANG TO DONG VAN LOVE MARKET

Let’s wake up in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and continue our incredible journey. We will check out of our resort and move 10 kilometers to the river fork. Notably, we have two options for you today:

This is an ideal choice for those who seek extraordinary riding experiences. We will join a 155-kilometer route full of dirt tracks and winding trails. Prepare yourself because these nerve-racking roads require stamina and driving skills. Seven riding hours will not be easy, but we assure you that it will be enjoyable. Also, you will gain profound knowledge about Ha Giang.

As our plan, we will show up at the hotel at 5:30 PM. If you want to see more attractions, the second option will be more suitable. National Highway 4C will lead us to Dong Van Geological Park in North Ha Giang. This landmark possesses outstanding sceneries and exceptional archaeological values. Next, we have to subdue a steep pass before we can see the Vietnam-China border on the left and stunning terraced fields on the right.

After a short break, we will ride toward Quan Ba Heaven Gate. The name of this site is not some kind of exaggeration. As soon as you see its grandeur, you will be amazed. Quan Ba offers a perfect view, but we will keep moving to reach Co Tien Twin Mountains.

Then, by following road 181, we will leave for Lung Tam village, where local people are masters in flax weaving. Our next destination will be Yen Minh Town. We will be there to have lunch after weaving through the extensive flax fields. In the afternoon, we will take National Highway 4C and come to Dong Van. There you can visit the Palace of Cat King, as well as the Lung Cu flag pole. As you can see, with this option, we can visit a dozen sites. Still, we will get to the hotel at 5:30 PM.

DAY 4: DONG VAN TO BAO LAC

Dong Van and Meo Vac represent two things: the grandeur of nature and the firm will of the people living here. They have to work hard to afford every single meal. Farewell to these friendly people and hit the road again.

After plenty of rough backroads, we finally got to Ma Pi Leng Pass – a highlight of this journey. With an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level, this 20-kilometer pass is one of the four greatest passes in North Vietnam. Along the pass are alluring landscapes of towering mountains and lush forests. You will need to ride will 100% attention because the terrifying slope and many sharp curves are a real challenge.

From Ma Pi Leng Pass, you can see the picturesque Nho Que River. 3-5 kilometers of off-road riding is necessary if you want to have a better view of the geological park. At noon, we can come by Meo Vac and have lunch. In the afternoon, there are two choices available.

If you don’t want to exert yourself to overcome rough roads, we can go on National Highway 34 to Bac Lac. This 90-kilometer road won’t be something difficult for us.

Another option will take us five hours to reach Bao Lac. In return, you will experience off-road riding and visit more attractions. We can cross the Nho Que River by bamboo rafts and then visit Khau Vai Love Market. You will not always find a particular market like this one. At night, we rest in Bao Lac and prepare for the next day.

DAY 5: BAO LAC TO BA BE LAKE

Ba Be National Park is our destination for today, and this attraction will surely bring you excitement. To get to Ba Be National Park, we rode for 40 kilometers, including different terrains. For those who derive pleasure from conquering a single off-road track, this route will satisfy you. Also, we will pass by streams, villages, and dense forests as well.

Right after lunch, we can immediately turn to Cho Ra town and Pac Ngoi village before reaching Ba Be Lake. UNESCO ranks the lake as one of the twenty most beautiful lakes in the world. This is where you can take excellent pictures with a great background. Around the lake are other attractive sites such as An Ma Temple, Ba Goa Island, Tien Pond, etc. We recommend a boat trip because it allows us to explore more. Swimming here is another fascinating idea on hot summer days.

DAY 6: BA BE TO HANOI

This is already the last day of our trip, so it’s time to say goodbye to Ba Be and come back to Hanoi. The first 30 kilometers will be on a small track to Chu Market. We can absolutely choose another backroad instead of that route (in case you want more adventure). We’d better have a hearty lunch as we will keep riding on national highways until we reach the capital city. Our 6-day motorbike tour exploring Northeast Vietnam will inevitably end up with plenty of unforgettable moments and memorable experiences.
