Itinerary

DAY 1: HANOI TO VU LINH

Right after a short briefing to grasp the itinerary and safety instructions, we will set off from the Hanoi center at around 9:30 AM. Right from the beginning of the trip, you can admire plenty of stunning scenery. By paying just a little attention, you can instantly realize the dramatic change in the landscape. The hustle and bustle of streets with heavy traffic will be replaced by humble villages and vast tranquil paddy fields.

To reach Vu Linh, we need to go for 180 kilometers, which will take us about 5 hours. However, there is no need to hurry. You can stop anywhere you find it beautiful to snap some excellent pictures. That’s how we store the great moments, isn’t it? We will spend our night at a homestay of the Yao people. You will surely find comfort in their hospitality.

DAY 2: VU LINH TO BA BE LAKE

The second day of the trip will lead us to Ba Be Lake – one of the most popular destinations in Northeast Vietnam. To reach Ba Be (Bac Kan province), we need to cross Tuyen Quang. The road won’t be too challenging until the last 10 kilometers. The closer we approach Ba Be, the more tortuous the trail becomes. We need you to ride with full attention here.

However, if you are confident with your riding skills or want as many adventures as possible, we can opt for a less familiar backroad. This route was used to serve the Vietnamese army in 1979. The trail is a real dare, so prepare yourself. After hours of riding, we can finally show up at Pac Ngoi village. This means we have reached Ba Be Lake. The site is full of exciting things to explore, but let’s save it for tomorrow. We can weave through the village first and see how local people here preserve their traditional values. Residents in this locality live in stilt houses, which are perfectly suitable for mountainous terrain. We will stay overnight in the lovely Pac Ngoi village.

DAY 3: EXPLORING BA BE LAKE

As we have said, today is for exploring Ba Be Lake. In case you don’t know, Ba Be Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world (ranked by UNESCO). The formation of the lake dates back to 200 million years ago. The landscapes here are undeniably breathtaking. Surrounding the large crystal clear lake are towering mountains covered in the green of the lush forests. On the lake, there are gorgeous islets with each of them followed by different legends. To enjoy the full beauty of the lake, we’d better take a boat trip.

After that, we can go to the local market to witness the distinctive cultural feature of this area. This is an excellent way to find and savor some delicacies such as grilled fish and shrimp, smoked sausage, wild bananas, etc.

There is an equally exciting alternative – visiting the Dau Dang waterfall. The fall is not surprisingly imposing, yet it has its unique attractiveness. The pristine splendor of the site is perfect for photographing. Besides visiting the attractions, we will spend our time on some off-road tracks through forests to arouse the adventurous spirit in you. After a drop by a small school to see how education is carried out in the region, we can call it a day and rest in a typical stilt house.

DAY 4: BA BE TO CAO BANG

Hey, let’s wake up soon for a stroll and then have a hearty breakfast. The fresh air and outstanding spectacles in Ba Be Lake will surely make you want to stay more. However, we have to bid farewell to this little land and continue our trip. Today we will leave for Cao Bang – a place with exceptional values for Vietnam’s modern history. The way will not offer you so many obstacles, yet you need to be careful with the sharp curves. After 5 hours of riding, we can check into our hotel in Cao Bang city and relax there. Don’t stay up too late because we will explore the greatness of Ban Gioc Waterfall deep in the forest.

DAY 5: EXPLORING BAN GIOC WATERFALL

Today is going to be excellent as we have a precious opportunity to explore nature’s masterpiece – Ban Gioc Waterfall. We kick off from Cao Bang city and head to Ban Gioc. But it will be a pity if we don’t come to several attractions on the way.

The first highlight of the fifth day is Ma Phuc Pass – the most impressive pass in Cao Bang. The pass nestles between two sublime mountain ranges. Although the pass is just 3.5 kilometers long, it still poses a threat with its terrifying sharp curves. Ma Phuc offers a great view of the whole valley, and some people even liken it to the way to the wonderland.

Next, we can take a closer look at Nguom Ngao cave in Gun village. It is said that the cave was found in 1921. What makes the cave stand out is the sparkling stalagmites and stalactites of different shapes and sizes. If you are born with a fertile imagination, the cave can win your heart even more quickly.

And finally, we are here – in front of Ban Gioc Waterfall. This is one of the four biggest cross-border waterfalls in the world. Yes, the fall belongs to both Vietnam and China. Ban Gioc Waterfall has a width of 100 meters and a height of 70 meters. The pool has a depth of 60 meters. From a distance, we can already admire its majesty fitting perfectly with the environs. It is irresistible to dive in and immerse ourselves in the emerald water here. Near the fall are plenty of attractions such as Thang Hen Lake, Phat Tich Pagoda, Pac Bo Cave, etc. Luscious grilled fish and cold beer are highly recommended to optimize our experience in this area.

After having a joyful time at Ban Gioc Waterfall, we will ride back to Quang Hoa village in Quang Uyen. After about one hour, we arrived at our homestay to rest and savor delicious local food.

DAY 6: EXPLORING LANG SON

Let’s say goodbye to Quang Hoa and ride to Lang Son. This province offers a significant number of attractions – Chi Lang Pass, Dong Kinh Market, To Thi Mountain, Bac Son Valley, and Mau Son. It would be great to explore all of these sites, but perhaps we don’t have enough time for that. However, there is a place that we cannot skip in Lang Son. We are talking about Bac Son valley. “Stunning” may not be enough to describe this valley. Surrounded by towering mountains are humble houses and vast rice fields. Believe us; you will fall in love with the landscape here, especially when in the ripe rice season.

DAY 7: LANG SON TO HANOI

The last day of our journey won’t be less exciting. We will explore Mau Son first before going back to vibrant Hanoi city. Located thirty kilometers away from Lang Son city, Mau Son is considered the second Sapa. This mountainous area is full of remarkable landscapes, and it stores the core cultural values of the Yao ethnic groups. Mau Son is also home to many delicacies such as salmon, honey-grilled chicken, peach, wine, etc.

After that, we will keep moving to Lang Son for lunch before getting back to Hanoi. On the way, you will encounter several pagodas and small villages. As Highway 1B is often in trouble with heavy traffic, we will take other roads to arrive at Hanoi before rush hour. Our 7-day trip exploring Northeast Vietnam from Hanoi to Lang Son will be completed in happiness.
